It was formed to meet the needs of a vibrant community situated in an area of multiple deprivations. The founders of the organisation saw the need in the area and the benefits for the community of being able to come together to discuss issues, create lasting friendships and set up new and varied projects. This was done with the aim of improving the outcomes for individuals and their families to determine a better future for themselves. The ethos of RCA has remained the same after all these years, but the organisation has grown massively, moving from the basement of our local housing office to a state of the art, energy-efficient, purpose-designed community centre named "The Gateway" built 12 years ago in partnership with The Children's Society. The Gateway from Ronnie Hughes on Vimeo. The Gateway is a Community and Children's Centre in Ravenscliffe, Bradford, UK. And this is the story of how the local community created a beautiful place for them to begin regenerating their neighbourhood, out of conditions where a less determined and less well-led community might have simply given up. We worked with the people of Ravenscliffe over a period of five years, on their vision for a building of their own and on how they would organise themselves to run it. And we saw them move from despair to elation and back again several times, before finally inviting us over... --- - Published: 2020-01-20 - Modified: 2026-03-22 - URL: https://www.thegateway.co.uk/ Welcoming, Respectful, Aspirational The centre aims to bring long term change in the Ravenscliffe and Greengates community. T&A Comunity reporter Haleem Saheed reported that the community café based at the Gateway Centre has now been renamed ‘Hideaway Café’ after a community vote and opened on Thursday, September 28. The community and local councillors came out to mark the occasion and a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place. To celebrate the reopening there was a buffet, quiz, book stall, tombola, guess the teddy and stalls. The Hideaway café is funded by the Tudor Trust to support the local community. The event was supported by My Living Well who have provided funding to run a Living Well Hub at the centre which promotes healthy living options and advice. A whole host of Bradford organisations attended the opening, to show their support for the great work the café does. Gateway Centre on Thackeray Road, Ravenscliffe, Bradford, was given a five-star hygiene rating by the Environmental Health department on June 8, 2023. This came after a thorough inspection of the café and food preparation area, to make sure everything was up to standard. Centre Manager - Matt Henderson, Manuel Shah - Chairman, Brenda Wilkinson - Cafe Co-ordinator and Ebony Taylor - Community Development officer. Image: Newsquest Matt Henderson, Centre Manager, said: “We’re really glad that we managed to retain our five-star rating. “It was definitely a thorough inspection and, on a day, when we only had one staff member working the community café. " “We didn’t know the inspection was going to take place, but it all went smoothly. The café offers low-cost meals to people in the Ravenscliffe area which has been described as one of the most ‘deprived’ areas in the country. This café is part of a community hub that offers people in the area support on finance, jobs and hopes to create long-term change in the area by tackling poverty and disadvantages. Mr Henderson added: “We do a lot for the community and we want to help them. “We get 20 to 30 people using the café everyday, with at least 100 people a day visiting the centre, so it is well used. As a result of the current public health response, the meeting of the Executive on Tuesday, 24th March will not now take place in the usual way. The business of the Executive will still be conducted, however, by means of a telephone conference call involving the Council Leader, Portfolio Holders and key senior officers. The Council Leader will lead the conference call and, from the Executive’s indication of its views on the items, will request the Chief Executive to take decisions under her delegated powers in accordance with those views. These arrangements will mean that press and public unfortunately cannot be present. After the teleconference, the Council will publish the Executive views and recommendations made to the Chief Executive on each item. The formal decisions made by the Chief Executive under her delegation will then be published a day later. The other Council meetings this week have either been cancelled or postponed as follows: The Area Planning Panel meetings this week have been postponed: The Council could not allow these to meet as they are usually attended by a significant number of people, which also made a virtual meeting impracticable. In view of the sometimes contentious items to be considered, it would not be desirable for officers to take these decisions under delegated powers.
